AfricaHacks partnered with StemHub Foundation to host an enlightening and valuable masterclass on 3D Design and the Value Proposition of 3D Printing for Africa and the world.
The fifth and last edition of the Tech series Masterclass which took place on Saturday, 13th June 2020 had two speakers: Dr. Adeola Olubamiji who is an advanced Manufacturing Technical Advisor at Cummins Inc. Indiana and Founder of Canadian non-profit STEMHub Foundation and Johnson Omeziri is a Mechanical Engineer at Cascade where he supervises technical documentation for products.
In the 3D Printing for Africa and the world session, both speakers gave an in-depth and practical session on 3D Design and 3D printing.
The virtual Google Meet Masterclass had one of the largest attendance in the Free Tech Skills Masterclass Series organized by AfricaHacks and StemHub Foundation. The Masterclass had the participants engaged in a 2-hour session which included introducing the participants to computer-aided design and 3D printing both theoretically and practically.
Certainly, the aim of the international tech session was to ensure that the black and minority community in Nigeria, Canada, USA, and other countries benefit from the growth happening for black people in tech. The session also aligns with one of the goals of AfricaHacks which is to create or facilitate learning resources for people in our community.
Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, 3D printing processes create objects by adding materials, allowing engineers to produce complex geometries. 3D Printing for Africa and other cutting-edge technologies could allow the continent to bypass industrialization and leapfrog further into the future, according to jstor.
The first session at the 3D Design and Value Proposition of 3D-Printing Masterclass involved Johnson Omeziri putting the participants through an introduction to Computer-aided design (CAD) and enlightenment and walkthrough on tools used For 3D Design. The description of the activities engaged in the first session includes:
- introduction to Computer-aided design(CAD)
- Introduction of Finite element analysis of 3D Design
- Introduction to OnShape makers for the 3D design workshop
- Topology optimization of 3D Design
Subsequently, Dr. Adeola Olubamiji put the participants through the value proposition of 3D Printing and enlightening the participants to different emerging trends and application of 3D printing such as 3D printing and 3D Design value proposition of addictive Manufacturing which involved :
- Rapid Prototyping
- Parts Consolidation
- Mass Consolidation etc.
